Archie - Free comic book day 2016 Reviews

Everything’s Archie and it’s goooood! This is the Free Comic Book Day edition of (ALL NEW) “Archie” #1 given free in the event of 2016, featuring two stories, the main one about Archie, and as an extra bonus, a sample of “Jughead” #1.The general rating is an average sum of the ratings given to both stories contained in this comic book.Creative Teams:ARCHIE #1Rating: ***** ( 5 stars )Writer: Mark WaidIllustrator: Fiona Staples--/--JUGHEAD #1 (SAMPLE)Rating: *** ( 3 stars )Writer: Chip ZdarskyIllustrator: Erica HendersonARCHIE’S HERE… AGAIN AND READY FOR THE NEW MILLENIUMI wish everybody would stop looking for a villain in this.Welcome back to Riverdale. This is the NEW Riverdale!Archie’s back for a new generation, remaining true to its original essence. The secret of updating a classic (in my humble opinion) is to understand what really needs to be updated and leaving the rest as it was originally created. It’s not that hard to grasp, but many creative teams don’t do that. Luckily, the winning team of Waid and Staples developed a brilliant re-introduction of this classic comic book to the audiences of the new millenium. Even the story isn’t only “told” with the Waid’s words but also through the Staples’ images. Awesome first issue.Archie's here, Betty's here, Veronica too (but in the issue #2, I guess), Reggie's here……and yep, Jughead too!And maybe you won’t believe me, but the best reimagined character is……Jughead!Jughead Jones is the silent hero, the smart one in the shadows, fooling everybody’s around him but the audience can see his big heart and his pinpoint wisdom. But don’t get me wrong, Archie Andrews is still the main character, the one who everybody is looking for, the one who everybody is talking about. Here, the “All New” Archie can be easily compared with Marty McFly (just without a Time Machine and a mad scientist). Cool guy, nice buddy and……plays the guitar in the school dance! Archie rocks… literally!Betty Cooper is still your all-american next-door girl, just adjusting to the concept of the new millenium. She knows Archie since they were in the kindergarden, and they were the Riverdale High’s Hottest Couple, until……The Lipstick Incident!!! (don’t ask me, I don’t have the details neither, but trust me, it was bad!)Reggie Mantle, from the few that you can get in the first issue, he looks like a Fonzie/Danny Zuko of the Mirror Universe, and you can bet that he doesn’t like Archie and he is trying to take a shot on Betty now that she’s available. And now, our favorite comic book high school gang have their own groupies!Enter: Maria, Sheila & KevinThose three friends are genuinely concerned about the well-being of Archie and Betty but maybe their methods aren’t the right ones, but don’t worry! Jughead is there!Definitely, the ALL NEW Archie is a blast and I am looking up for reading the first TPB.WE AIN’T… WITHOUT JUGHEAD BEAT… OR MAYBE WE SHOULDJug? Care to mark your legal name here?.In the case of this sample of Jughead #1 was a disappointment that I couldn’t believe. (I wasn’t harder on my rating of this sample just because I found it unfair to the Archie comic to be dragged with a lower general rating)If you remember, I told you that, Jughead, in the All NEW Archie comic, he is easily the best character, so my expectative about reading this sample were quite high. However, it’s like you’d be reading the Jughead of the past, and worse since the artwork is a crap (and that was the nicest way that I could say about that “drawings”).Don’t get me wrong, the Jughead of the past was charming and funny, but we are supposed to be reading a comic book that it’s part of this “ALL NEW Riverdale” reimagined comic book universe, so I can’t understand how Jughead can be so different in his own comic book from the way that he is portraited in the Archie main comic book. And honestly, the artwork is SOOO LAME that I can’t believe that the artist had the cynicism of cashing a paycheck for “drawing” that garbage.

It's not easy to update a character like Archie who is outdated almost by definition, but Waid & Staples somehow pull it off by delivering just the right level of cheesiness - it's fun and feels (more or less) contemporary, you know, but it's still Archie. Well done!

Another Free Comic Book Day success story. I wouldn't have even picked this up for free if my son didn't grab it, as I never liked Archie comics growing up. But since it was already in the pile when I got home, I gave it a read, and have to admit I'm ordering the first trade paperback because I found the story so fresh and compelling.

Was never a big Archie fan, but I picked this up at FCBD. (pause) Archie is the Zach Morris of Riverdale. Hes popular and dates the most popular girl in school (cough... cough... Kelly). But this lipstick situation caused the biggest breakup in the schools history and now its time to get them back together. Its good for what it is and I'm interested in what else they have to offer. Consider me screeched.

Picked this up at FCBD but I'm confused exactly what I read. Not sure if this is Archie #1 or perhaps a collection of the first three issues of Archie (the FCBD issue is told in three chapters, with an excerpt of Jughead in the back.I've never read any Archie comics before but I knew some basics—Archie has a love triangle between Betty and Veronica and Jughead is his crown-wearing friend. This "reboot" has Archie and Betty broken up from page 1 and the rest of the issue has a lot of fun with their friends trying to get them back together. I could see myself picking up this series. It seems fun and the artwork is engaging.

The Archie franchise got a major modern make-over and let me tell you from the get-go, it is that good!We all know and love the Archie comics, right? Mark Waid breathes new life into this franchise by giving the story a more modern feel with the current teen drama problems. What is that #LipstickIncident??? Hopefully, we'll find out in the next issues! And let's not forget about the art! Compared to the original, Fiona Staples's art of Archie and his friends are looking so fiiiinnneeeee. Just look at that cover!

Updated Archie, same sort of stories but modified slightly with things like smart phones and better art. Not bad really for what it is but not my thing. I am glad they decided not to just take old yeller in the back.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.Archie drawn like people?!! WEIRD!!But it actually wasn't that bad.I think Jughead might be the way to go though. He's from the same people who are bringing us Squirrel Girl and Howard the Duck.

Mark Waid and Fiona Staples made me far more interested in an Archie comic than I ever thought possible.

I love this Archie comic. Implemented with many short stories and half at them are great. I wished i would see the ending to the first one with the break between Archie and his girlfriend.

I totally loved this. It taps into high school nostalgia but still feels relatively current.
